Listen to the new song from Joshua Smith – From My Eyes
Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
I grew up in Placerville in El Dorado County. I got my first guitar 9 years ago when I was 18 as a gift from my grandmother. I practiced from a beginners book then began playing on my own and writing music. I have never had any type of formal lessons. About 2 years ago I started playing at a local café and bar. This past summer I played at a much bigger bar for larger crowds and did a little recording in studio.
What do you have coming up? What are some of the new projects we can expect to see?
I’m working on new music and my own vocals for the songs I write. My girlfriend and I are expecting our first baby in July so this has been a bit of a distraction. I’ve been working on production and videos for my music while looking for a label.
Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.
I wrote From My Eyes while going through a difficult time in my life and it has a lot of personal meaning to me. I hope listeners relate to the song as well.
How does your music separate yourself from other artists and bands out there?
I don’t want to be the musician that sounds like everyone else. I am my own sound so I’m not sure what category of music I would be considered.
Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
Promoting myself, getting my music and name out to a bigger audience.
What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
I got drawn into some drug use and moved to Oklahoma where my focus was on MMA Cage Fighting for a couple of years. I don’t feel this was the healthiest time in my music development. I came home to California and went through rehab and back to basics and my music.
What are some things artists need to be careful of?
Copyright your music and lyrics and be careful not to be stuck as a bar band or cover band unless that’s what you really want to do.
What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
In my experience I’ve found you need to make sure you have someone in charge of the band so there aren’t disputes because of egos and fall outs with friends.
What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
The internet can reach farther and faster than most any other way. I like live shows as well so I can let people hear my music in person and I can see others enjoying it.
Where can people visit you?
I am in the process of creating a website for my music, you can find me on idsmith2686.wix.com/
