Exclusive Interview

Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
I am from Manhattan, New York and I grew up listening to all different kinds of music. My parent’s musical tastes were very diverse, so I was exposed to opera, Broadway, pop, and rock all at a very young age. I started writing songs on piano and guitar when I was eight years old and have been writing ever since. When I was sixteen, I was on American Idol as the first contestant ever to go on the show as a songwriter first and a singer second. At that point, I had written over 100 original songs. The exposure from being on American Idol afforded me the opportunity for people to hear my music.

What do you have coming up? What are some of the new projects we can expect to see?
I released my second album Undercover Lover May 2012. I am currently rehearsing with my new band so that we can start playing out at the local clubs and venues in Los Angeles. I am constantly working on new music and have lots of new songs that I’m looking forward to playing out, as well as the songs on my  Undercover Lover album.

Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.
I am currently promoting my new song and music video Take Me For A Ride, which is approaching a million views on YouTube.
This song is a fun, upbeat tune about a girl who likes the guy’s truck better than the guy (He he). Here is the link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wG8JWiGlR_s.

How does your music separate yourself from other artists and bands out there?
I have always been a driven songwriter. When I was fifteen, I submitted three songs I wrote to Music Connection Magazine and it became their #1 Pop Demo of the Year. The difference between me and other artists is that I am a solo writer, who at twenty one, has written over 200 original songs. My songs are upbeat, uplifting, catchy, and fun. Whether you are in your car, or at the club, my music fits right in! The songs are melodically captivating with memorable choruses and hooks that my fans can relate to.

Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
One of the hardest challenges in the industry today is getting industry executives and labels to listen to your music. Even if they like the music, it is increasingly difficult to move forward from there.

What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
I have not had any major setbacks because I have not allowed anything to set me back. I went to college and finished my four year songwriting degree and music business minor in three years. During that time, I was still writing music, performing live shows in Nashville, Tennessee, and released my second album Undercover Lover as I left college.

What are some things artists need to be careful of?
Artists need to be careful of any businessperson who wants a part of their publishing or a songwriting credit on material they had nothing to do with.

What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
Be true to yourself and never give up. Don’t let anybody waste your time or interfere with your direction and your plans.

What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
I love the power of YouTube and various social media sites. It’s exciting every time I post a status on Facebook because I love seeing how people respond to what I have to say.
